When a child is diagnosed with a chronic illness, the entire family is diagnosed. Parents become caregivers and medical advocates overnight, siblings quietly set aside their own needs, and once a child leaves the hospital, the social-emotional safety net disappears—leaving families isolated and invisible. Bounce Children’s Foundation was founded in 2015 to fill that gap, transforming the lives of chronically ill children and their loved ones by shifting all of them from surviving to thriving. Across Chicagoland, Bounce surrounds families with a portfolio of free, award-winning programs—family adventures, therapeutic care packages, donated event tickets, educational sessions, and a 24/7 online community. In its first decade, Bounce has transformed more than 3,000 lives across 642 families, with a remarkable 99% retention rate. As one Bounce mom put it, the foundation lets her “be a mom, not a nurse.”
For nearly 20 years, Chicago Run has used the simple, joyful act of running to promote the health and wellness of Chicago’s children. Founded in 2007, our innovative programs remove the financial and geographic barriers that keep young people—especially on the South and West Sides—from staying active. Through a continuum of in- and out-of-school programs serving youth from Pre-K through their first jobs, we help kids build physical fitness, social-emotional skills, and a sense of belonging. This year, Chicago Run served nearly 4,000 young people, and the impact is clear: participants are 72% more likely to attend school on program days, in a district where 43% of students are chronically absent. We believe every child, regardless of zip code, deserves the transformative joy of running.
Evanston Scholars believes a college degree can change the trajectory of a young person’s life—and that ambition shouldn’t be limited by income, background, or being the first in your family to go to college. Since 2011, we’ve supported a diverse group of Evanston students through a comprehensive six-year journey: individualized college counseling, mentorship, test prep, college visits, and career readiness that carries them from the admissions process through graduation and into a career. Today we serve more than 100 High School Scholars and 170 College Scholars, with nearly 200 alumni. Our Scholars graduate college at a rate of 78%—roughly five times that of peers with similar backgrounds. With every cohort, we help capable, motivated students turn opportunity into a future-proof career.
In communities affected by violence, poverty, and limited opportunity, Hammers Haven NFP offers young people a safe place to grow. This Chicago-based nonprofit empowers youth and strengthens families through boxing, mentorship, and community outreach—giving kids ages 8 to 18 a structured environment to build discipline, confidence, and life skills. Operating out of Hammer Fitness & Boxing, the program pairs boxing fundamentals with character-building, mental wellness support, and seasonal initiatives like the “Box the Fear Away” Summer Boot Camp. Hammers Haven extends its reach to entire families through food drives and essential-item giveaways for households facing hardship. Led by Pastors Alvetia and Johnny Higgins, Hammers Haven helps young people fight for a better future—one round at a time.
A serious diagnosis can leave a child feeling isolated—missing school and sidelined from the activities their peers take for granted. Team IMPACT changes that. Through a clinically backed, two-year therapeutic program, we match children ages 5 to 16 living with serious illnesses and disabilities onto collegiate sports teams, where they become official teammates rather than patients. They attend practices, games, and team dinners, gaining mentors, role models, and a community that believes in them. Guided by case managers who are certified child life specialists and social workers, every match is built around the goals of belonging, empowerment, and resilience. Since launching in Chicago in 2019, Team IMPACT has matched 146 kids to teams across Illinois, supporting families who live with more than 250 different diagnoses.
